Russell’s Approach

Meet Best Life Counselling’s Relationship Counsellor.

Relationship Counselling for couples,, as well as: parenting approach disputes, sibling disputes (adults), conflict around care of elders, parent/grandparent disputes, post separation counselling..

Russell, based on client feedback in many different contexts and experience Russell will offer you the following:‍‍:

‍ ‍Patience, persistence and pathways—You will see from some of the sample client feedback below, Russell offers all three  of these “p’s”. In relationship issues, it will depend on what both parties want to explore and also what is appropriate in terms of well-being for all parties, including children (where this is relevant).

‍ ‍Options—Building on the concept of pathways, Russell will help people consider options and help people process the implications of these options.    Again, in relationships people often have preferences for different options.

‍ ‍Compassion, connection and collaboration—Russell  approaches are compassionate and hopeful. The sample feedback below demonstrates Russell connects with a wide group of people and collaborates to explore values that are important to them.

Make it stand out.

  • "Russell helped me to feel at ease. His knowledge of mediation and wisdom really helped me at a tough time."

  • The experience of separation had been a solitary and unacknowledged one between me and God. It did help ease the pain and provided the opportunity for Russell to ask the right questions to help me see myself and my circumstances in a new light. The list making and alternative story exploration was concise and affirming. Russell's input did help me shift my thinking and beliefs (story) about myself. Equally helpful, was the personhood of my counselor and the manner in which he approached the entire process and interacted with me. Russell faithful commitment to the tasks, his quiet, calm, respectful, gentle, non judgemental, way he spoke to me was life affirming.

  • Focusing on my strengths and the future, rather than dwelling too much on the past, by using the model of the Tree of Life was helpful. I hadn't realised what strengths I brought from my past to my current life. The concept of consigning negative events to the compost was helpful.

  • I have greatly improved as a result of the therapy and found it very affirming and confidence-building.

  • [Russell was] always careful not to put words into my mouth, but only gave general guidance, rather than suggestions.

  • I have never had the feeling that you had a feeling of power; I never felt under pressure to answer anything in a particular way. Further explanation was sometimes required, but I had no problem seeking clarification.

  • I thought that there might be a power dynamic with Russell being a male older than myself. I was worried also being younger that I may not be appropriate for the narrative therapy. This was quickly put to ease as Russell made me feel respected and heard. He addressed this in the first session which I thought was really good as it might have influenced my authenticity and I may not have thought about it consciously.

    Former client (used with permission)

  • I like that this approach was person centred and that it had a focus on what I value and my identity because I believe finding my identity is a big theme for me after separation and in this new chapter of my life. Also a beneficial approach for me as it really put the power into my own hands to help myself. With a tendency for people pleasing and codependency this is especially important.

    Former client (used with permission)

  • I have seen psychologists before, and I felt it was more question and answer. In the narrative session I felt the presence of the therapist as guiding me, but I wasn’t really aware of it. It felt very authentic and I felt a genuine sense of the therapist wanting to help and being supportive. I didn’t feel like I was being 'worked on' but more worked with to bring out things that were already in me and just having them sort of uncovered.

    Former client (used with permission)

  • I took part not because I have come to a crisis or difficult point in my life but for enjoyment. I was open to the experience and even the one narrative session I found more beneficial than 6 sessions with a psychologist last year for a ‘tune up’. It made me recognise I don’t just coast along in life, I have values that guide me and when I try to solve them these values can be drawn upon.
